Presenting Veritus - the Parliamentary Debate, where debators will flaunt their skills in the parliamentary style and nothing else prevails, but the truth. Witness issues so compelling, arguments so creative, and passion never seen before as these debators compete to emerge victorious.

Rules & Regulations


1. The debate shall follow the Modified Asian Parliamentary Format.

2. Any college student from any course can participate in the event. The participants must present their ID card at the time of registration.

3. Participants are required to come in teams of three. Each team shall be paired with another to debate on a topic which shall be presented on the day of the event itself.

4. One of the teams will act as the “Government”, comprising of the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister and the Government Whip. The other team shall act as the “Opposition”, comprising of the Leader of the Opposition, the Deputy Leader of the Opposition and the Opposition Whip.

5. The two teams shall be given 15 minutes of preparatory period before their speeches.

6. The order of the speeches, their time limits and their speaking roles shall be as follows:

* Prime Minister (5 mins)

* Provide a background for the motion at hand.

* Explain the framework of the case as prepared by the team

* Present the 1st argument of the team

* Opposition Leader (5 mins)

* Refute the stance taken by the Government

* Explain the framework of the case as prepared by the team

* Present the 1st argument of the team

* Deputy Prime Minister (5 mins)

* Rebut the arguments stated by the Opposition Leader, and the rebuttals against the Prime Minister

* Present the 2nd and 3rd arguments of the team

* Assert the stance of the team

* Deputy Opposition Leader (5 mins)

* Rebut the arguments stated by the Deputy Prime Minister and the rebuttals against the Opposition Leader

* Present the 2nd and 3rd arguments of the team

* Assert the stance of the team

* Government Whip (3 min)

* Rebut the arguments stated by the Opposition Leader and Deputy Opposition Leader

* Counter the rebuttals against the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister

* Assert the stance without providing any new arguments

* Opposition Whip (3 min)

* Rebut the arguments stated by the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister

* Counter the rebuttals against the Opposition Leader and Deputy Opposition Leader

* Assert the stance without providing any new arguments.

* Sum-up by Opposition (2 min)

* Could be given by the Opposition Leader or Deputy Opposition Leader.

* Summarize the case made by the team without providing any new arguments or rebuttals.

* Sum-up by Government (2 min)

* Could be given by the Opposition Leader or Deputy Opposition Leader.

* Summarize the case made by the team without providing any new arguments or rebuttals.

7. The medium for the discourse shall be English only. Usage of any other language in the speeches shall lead to the deduction of points.

8. Usage of the Internet during the preparatory period is allowed.

9. There will be three rounds for the event – Preliminary, Semi-Finals and Finals. The top 4 teams from the Preliminary shall qualify for the semi-finals, of which the top 2 teams shall compete in the finals.

10. The decisions made by the judges would be final and binding.
